We are a Kiwi/French couple (with a new baby) who had the dream of circumnavigating the globe by sailboat… initially having no clue of how to sail. Through our videos we hope to inspire others to explore alternative options of living and to spread ocean awareness. With YOUR support we can keep these movies coming every Monday/Tuesday (depending on your timezone).

Sailing Sulawesi: Exciting new Adventures. Ep 264
Sailing around Sualwesi, Indonesia. We sailed through the night on our way to a lovely city called Baubau in South-East Sulawesi. We spent a few days there exploring the amazing 16th century fort, actually the biggest fort in the world. Next we sailed up the Buton Straight and found a beautiful spot to anchor for a few days. We got to show Eli some beautiful coral reef but man, we had a LOT of rain in that week!

Indonesia has a very long history when it comes to ocean travel. They've sailed far and wide for centuries now, fishing, trading and transporting goods. The long beach at Tana Beru is where these wooden ships have been built sinc...

Marie is feeling pretty upset during a very rough crossing from Sumbawa to Sulawesi, wondering why we are even doing this. Our 5 month old son Eli is on her mind and the potential danger we are putting him in. Very valid thoughts for a parent to have. Sailing full time can also be very rew...

Trade Runner gets along so well even though I was running a very conservative sail plan. Our destination was Moyo Island and its very famous yet totally unknowen Mata Jitu Waterfall. Not many people vist here as its on a pretty rem...

After a week in the boat yard we'd eaten all our fresh food and it was time to go shopping. Fixing Our Boat Post-reef Disaster! Episode 256
Переглядів 8 тис.2 місяці тому
Our poor sailboat sustained some damage when a squall blew us onto a reef. Repairing Trade Runner meant hauling the boat out of the water and in Indonesia this can be fraught with danger as the facilities are a bit sketchy. It wouldn't be till the boat was on land before I would fully know what the damage is and how I would go about fixing it. When I sailed Trade Runner from Australia to Indone...

What a terrible night, stuck on a reef, wind howling and all alone! At 4am we were awakened by a super strong squall rolling over us. Within minutes our anchor had dragged and we were blown sideways onto a coral reef. In crazy wild condition we did what we could to free her but once we realised that there was no water coming aboard and we were in no immediate danger, we calmed down and thought ...

Guys what an epic adventure! I bloody loved the look into this unique and incredible traditional boat building. So true about what you said 'if there is a will there is a way in Indo'. This was so epic and really well put together, loved every minute especially your last comments on happiness. Cheers mate! Josh
That was such an epic episode, the anchorage at the end is so dreamy. Bloody loved that shot of Tradie and the jungle with you guys zooming around on the dinghy! Thanks for the video and constant source of inspiration! Keep it up guys, big love - Josh
Well done guys another great episode, thanks for showing us the local scenery , the little man is growing fast cheers from Australia
@@johnwalker6711 yeah he is, shooting up like a weed. Thanks for watching John
Great video of a cool spot. Glad you saw a bit of a break in the rain.
Thanks mate
Merde! I've been looking forward to your return to Indonesia and this trip around Sulawesi is getting off to a great start! Best wishes from San Francisco.
Things have been going great so far, with the normal challenges of course, loving Sulawesi.
That looks awesome.... hope you guys are having fun
Cheers Pil, loving it up here.
What a magical place calm cool and quiet. That must be the best place you have ever anchored.
It was definitely in the best ones but the lack of underwater life definitely made this place a bit under some others, as we love watching animals 😅
Yeah what Marie said, visually it was stunning but in a spot like this you’d normally see heaps of baby sharks, Rays, and different fish. These places are nursery’s basically but here we saw almost nothing alive underwater.
One of the most beautiful place s in the world and the people treated it like shit they disgust me
A nice video that brought back great memories. We anchored in exactly the same spot in our mono but fortunately without the rain. It was hard to leave. Cheers!
You did? Yeah sweet spot for sure.
Interesting... and different so continue enjoying...
Groovy guys thank you,
🙏
Another great video guys, paddling through the jungle, how cool, you'd think you're the only 3 on the planet... Loved Marie zooming in the dinghy at the end.. Going hard !!. What a great life you two, are giving your little boy, fantastic stuff... You guys are actually,,, really living your lives, when must of us clearly dont. Well done. Thanks so much for sharing your adventures - cheers
Oh thank you so much, what a nice message ! We are glad you appreciated this episode 😊
Very nice vidio
Im share
🙏
Nice brother
🤙🙏
Marie excellent video. Vernon, you can now focus on boat jobs lol. Eli is growing up so fast. What worries me with you swimming in such a beautiful scenic area is that Sulawesi is known for its Sea Crocodiles. Aren't you afraid of swimming in the unknown surroundings. I am sure you have spoken and had fact checked all this out before coming to the area. Great drone shots in this video as well Looking forward to next video
We are asking locals always about crocs before going to swim. There are some sea crocodiles in Sulawesi for sure but most places, they killed so much the underwater life than even a croc would not able to survive 😂 there were nothing to eat for them there !
Brilliant visuals and perfect editing all around. Just don’t stop in a shallow spot by a populated area there, or the whole town is coming aboard all at once! 😅
Thank you so much 😊
Yep, we love all our cats interactions with the locals people but to find a safe spot with no villages nearby is very rare and we loved it.
It's an unreal to think there's over 8 billion humans on earth, yet you can go to some places and not see a soul for days on end. It's even more unbelievable when you can do that in a paradise, it's not a waterless and oppressive desert, but paradise. Love it mate, great times
That’s why we go sailing mate, to find these places that are special and that most people can’t get too.
Great vid Vern, your better half is doing great! (baby is a darlin')
Marie edited this video and the last one and I love that she has a much different style than I do. Good to change things up.
🎉🎉🎉🎉 WOW things moving❤right along❤ awesomeness your videos soak it all up what a world❤❤
Thank you 🙏
Enjoy Mike, much more coming
Wow loving the new format of your videos. Thanks for sharing your amazing adventures, and these beautiful place's.
Glad you like them!
Thank you so much ! 😊
Another great video.Beautiful scenery.
Thank you very much!
Lol, you're "partner"? Oh, how close you two must be. Gee wiz, he's your hubby, your old man, your husband, the father of your child ...unless you're woke, then he's your .. partner
A perfect example of someone who's not aware of other cultures? You probably heard that Marie is not a native English speaker, she's French. Can you really imagine a French person saying any of the words you wrote? We get people from 50 or so countries watching our videos. Outside of your country who do you imagine would understand sayings like "my old man, Hubby etc?
Any words I am using, I have always someone to tell something 😅! I was saying lover, and people told me it was for people who has an affair, I can’t tell husband as we are not married and I said than he is the father of our son. As Vern said, English is my second language and doing voice over in another language is really hard for me as I can’t find the precise words of my mother tongue… but jumping on conclusions of being woke or not, and the way you are commenting it… I hope you are speaking many other languages perfectly to feeling untitled to judge my way of speaking English
I don't know if they're married or not, but by using the word "partner" I'd assume they're not married, but partners. I'm a 62 year old father of 4 and I refer to my "missus" as my partner, as we're not married. Also we're Aussie's and in our lingo an "old man" is your father, not your fella or bloke. For me 'partner" is the go too in Australia at least
@@SailingLearningByDoingman, I wish < I > could call my lady a partner. Seems like half the time she’s my rival or something... the other half she just plainly ignores me! 😊
Well said we are running into more and more people like that very sad.@@SailingLearningByDoing
If she already called little Eli grumpy, I wonder what she sometimes call you, Vernon! Keeping it real... always... mostly! 😅 You got a good one there mate. Congrats to both for being awesome!
What do you mean? I'm never Grumpy😁
Kamu pernah ke luwuk banggai teluk lalong 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

What a beautiful spot to anchor and enjoy seeing the culture of the island.
Why is teak wood so expensive everywhere else around the world, yet these people can waste it making boats?
What would you prefer to waste it on?
@@SailingLearningByDoing 1) They should "waste it" by leaving the trees alone, and only harvesting what is necessary for teak wood veneers or other high end furniture/architecture/museum etc. that will be long lasting. In 20 years these boats will be ratty and beat to h3ll and discarded which is a TREMENDOUS and inefficient use of the wood given how much each boat consumes. 2) The boats should be built from a more renewable source, such as pine, fir, oak. 3) These teak trees are a dwindling resource, they should be harvested very selectively, not slashed for immediate and temporary consumption, and alternate sources used, kind of like what the enviro-Nazis are the eco-freaks always screaming bloody murder about with petroleum vs "alternate" energy sources.
Super
you're not begging for views properly. just saying. there's a way to do it, and the best simply dont do it
thanks I guess
this beach boat scenery from above, is magical and so poetic.
🙏
You’re in my backyard when I was kid in the seventies. Expat kiwi that grew up on this beautiful island Best people ever Ever
Sweet place to grow up.
Lol a spirit level on a boat, thats funny. The boat aint level mate. You make something plumb it'll make the whole deal crooked.
The boat isn't floating. If you start off level and work your way up wouldn't it remain level?
Til it gets in the water. Only thing level on a boat is the water/scum line.
Thanks!
Thanks in return!
Absolutely brilliant content. What a fascinating concept. Thank you for sharing.
Glad you liked this video Jay.
GREAT VIDEO EDITING and music
Thanks.
Thank you so much
Behoorlijk hout is haast niet meer te krijgen. Allemaal snel groeiende takken. Het teak waar schepen 100 jaar geleden van gebouwd werden is praktisch op. Niets geleerd😢
Awesome
Just awesome very nice 🦅
Thanks.
are you sure your not the Dad of @xQc? www.youtube.com/@xQcOW/videos lol you remind me of him alot.. same mannerisms and favor each other and you both say "it is what it is" quite often
100% sure I'm not
huh, smoking while working with wood, nothing wrong can go there! 💀

Such real life 🎉
Buddy chinchin oakum luh…

Do you ever feel like you have to give the locals money when they bring you food?
It’s always obvious if they’re trying to sell you something or bring gifts. We gave them some things too, some crew shirts and hats.
No, and the first day when they offered us a calmar, we proposed to pay for it and they seems offended that we proposed and refused.
Local hospitality can be overwhelming
Haha, yes if it is a whole village
👍
So carrying a bunch of extra fuel filters I suppose?
Yep for sure, always have 5-6 of all filters and impellers etc for each engine. Oil and fuel filters can be found in Indonesia quite easily.
Nice to see Eli recovered. WOnderful friendly people. Such a change from our increasingly isolated communities that are suspicious of visitors. Beautiful sunset shots. Maybe have some school supplies or craft projects to hand ?
Yes it was bitter sweet to leave such a special place.
Awesome video, well done MM, loved your narration. Video and stills interwoven with story was beautiful and impressively done😘😘😘
Thank you Marie 😊 ! It was really a long job but we are happy of the result
Great video! Yep, I would have been overwhelmed by the amount of folks visiting.
Haha yep ! Especially when we are living with no social life almost all the rest of the time 😂
Wow, so many people holding your child or getting very close. That must have been stressful.
This was a bit too much sometimes, especially when he was tired, but people were really careful with him.
We want Eli to grow up feeling comfortable around all sorts of people. But yeah, it was a bit stressful at times when you could see he was getting a bit uncomfortable with all the attention.
Those locals were amazing, but that many people can be overwhelming. Well done! :)
Yeah exactly. Was amazing but got too much after 3 days.
Yeah looked a little overwhelming, despite them being friendly nice people I'd find being mobbed on my boat like that a little too much
They are all so curious about our lifestyle and what we call home. Privacy is anyway a foreign concept to them.
